Road Trip Chronicles: A 3-Day Escape from Chennai to Chikmagalur

Looking for the perfect weekend getaway from the hustle of Chennai? A road trip to Chikmagalur—the coffee land of Karnataka—might just be the answer. From freezing mountain peaks and rugged jeep rides to ancient temples and serene lakes, here is how we spent an unforgettable three days.

Day 1: The Midnight Drive & Serene Lakes

Our journey began at 25 June 2026 11:00 PM on Friday as the four of us packed into the car and left Chennai behind. By 12:30 AM, we were making our first stop for a quick tea break at Kancheepuram.

The initial leg of the trip tested our patience with heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic all the way until the Pallikonda toll plaza. However, choosing the Hoskote route paid off beautifully. It treated us to a short, scenic ghat road, and once we hit the express highway, we were finally able to cruise at a great pace.

Welcome to Chikmagalur

  • 6:00 AM: We rolled into Tumkur just as the sun was rising and stopped for a much-needed morning coffee at a local Udupi hotel.
  • 10:00 AM: We arrived in Chikmagalur and immediately headed to Ayyanakere Lake, a massive, peaceful water body surrounded by hills—the perfect introduction to the region.
  • 11:30 AM: Checked into our hotel, Colors Stay Chikmagalur, to freshen up.

For lunch, we ordered in from Mughal Durbar. After a short afternoon power nap to make up for the overnight drive, we headed out to Hirekolale Lake, which offers stunning postcard views as the sun begins to dip. Also Short trek towards Bandekallu Gudda view point , Trek was moderate at evening

We wrapped up our evening shopping for famous local spices and chocolates at Capulus and Spices. We grabbed dinner at Hotel Grand Maharaja (which, honestly, was a bit underwhelming), before calling it a night to prepare for an early morning adventure.

Day 2: Freezing Peaks & Rugged Waterfalls

We started early the next morning, leaving our car behind and taking a taxi toward Mullayanagiri Peak, the highest peak in Karnataka.

Travel Tip: There is a strict forest department check-post on the way, so make sure your vehicle passes and bookings are sorted in advance!

Upon reaching Seethalayanagiri, we dropped the taxi. Because of the terrain and local regulations, you have to hire local 4x4 jeeps to get to the actual peak.

Standing on Top of Karnataka

Mullayanagiri is easily one of the best peaks I have ever visited. The moment we ascended, the climate did a complete 180. While it was moderate at the base, it was absolutely freezing at the top—hands, eyes, feet, everything was numb! We started the short trek to the ultimate summit, and walking through the misty, biting cold was an incredible, memorable experience.

After heading back down, our itinerary was packed:

  • Honnammana Halli Falls & Baba Budangiri: We visited the Dattatreya Bababudan Swamy Dargah/Temple, a beautiful and unique site where both Hindus and Muslims come together to pray.
  • Attigundi Hill: A famous shooting spot with panoramic valley views.
  • Z Point: Another awesome vantage point offering breathtaking views of the Western Ghats.

The Wild Ride to Hebbe Falls

After a quick lunch, we headed toward Hebbe Falls. Be prepared for a crowd here—we had to wait in a queue for about an hour just to get onto the official forest jeeps.

The 30-minute jeep ride to the falls was a wild, bone-rattling journey through terrible, rugged terrain—but it was worth every bump. The waterfall itself was nothing short of incredible. By the time we wrapped up and returned to the base, darkness had already fallen.

We ended our action-packed day with a delicious dinner at Hotel Kurinji before heading back to the hotel for a well-deserved sleep.

Day 3: Ancient Architecture & The Journey Home

Sunday morning marked the end of our mountain getaway. After checking out of Colors Stay, we began our return journey toward Chennai, but not without one last cultural stop.

On the way back, we visited the magnificent Chennakesava Temple in Belur. Built during the Hoysala Empire, the intricate stone carvings and architectural beauty here are absolutely mesmerizing and a must-visit for anyone passing through.

By late afternoon, we reached Bangalore and stopped at Meghana Foods in Electronic City for their legendary Biryani—the perfect final meal for a fantastic road trip.

With full stomachs and great memories, we hit the highway and safely reached Chennai by 10:30 PM.

Quick Trip Summary:

  • Total Distance: ~1,000 km round-trip
  • Best View: Mullayanagiri Peak (Carry a heavy jacket!)
  • Most Adventurous Activity: The 4x4 Jeep ride to Hebbe Falls
  • Best Meal: Meghana Biryani, Bangalore
